FAQ
Acupuncture FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Treatment
Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that can benefit a wide range of conditions. Whether you’re new to acupuncture or just have some lingering questions, here are some of the most common FAQs we hear in the clinic.
Can I Listen to My Own Music During Acupuncture?
Yes, of course! Many of our patients bring their own music or listen to an audiobook. We encourage anything that helps you relax while on the table for about 30 minutes. We do ask that you avoid handheld books or anything requiring movement, as the goal is to stay still during acupuncture.
Is there scientific evidence that supports acupuncture as an effective treatment?
There is tons of research that continues to grow in support acupuncture! We like to refer to the website https://www.evidencebasedacupuncture.org/ for updated literature.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
That totally depends on what’s going on with your body. Some people need just one treatment to regain balance, while others require weekly visits indefinitely. Most patients are encouraged to come once per week for about eight visits. Repetition is key—this consistency helps your body establish neuroplasticity so it can maintain the changes acupuncture brings.
Can I Just Come as Needed Instead of Sticking to a Treatment Plan?
Of course! A little acupuncture is better than none. Some patients need maintenance or quick balancing, while others benefit from a structured treatment plan. If you have a complex condition requiring deep attention, a consistent plan is best—but if you just need a tune-up, come in whenever you feel like it!
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
No—or at least, usually not! The level of sensation depends on the acupuncture style used. Dr. Kelly primarily practices Japanese acupuncture, which uses thinner needles and a gentle, highly precise technique. Most patients feel deep relaxation on the table rather than discomfort.
Does Acupuncture help [Insert Condition Here]?
The short answer—yes! Acupuncture works by supporting the body’s internal balance and activating its natural ability to heal itself. Our bodies are incredible living systems, capable of much more than we often give them credit for. Some examples of what we see success with include psycho-emotional disorders, insomnia, digestive disorders, chronic pain & migraines, auto-immune dysfunction, and fertility. Because we are working with the root cause, that internal balance, very few conditions are off the table.
Is There Medicine or a Supplement on the Tip of the Needle?
Nope! The relaxation and healing effects of acupuncture come from stimulating your vagus nerve and activating the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” state that helps the body heal.
What is an Acupoint?
Acupoints are specific locations along the meridians and nervous system that are rich in energy and proprioceptive nerves. When stimulated, these points send precise signals to the brain about what we want the body to do.
What Should I Wear to My Acupuncture Appointment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. If needed, we can provide draping to ensure your comfort.
How Long Does an Acupuncture Session Last?
A typical session lasts about 45-60 minutes, with around 30 minutes spent resting with the needles in place.
Are the Needles Sterile and Single-Use?
Yes! We use sterile, single-use, disposable needles to ensure the highest level of safety and hygiene.
Can I Eat Before Acupuncture?
It’s best to eat a light meal or snack beforehand. Avoid coming in on an empty stomach or feeling overly full, as that can make the session less comfortable.
Can I Exercise After Acupuncture?
Gentle movement like walking or stretching is fine, but avoid intense exercise immediately after your session. Give your body time to integrate the treatment.
Will I Feel Different Right Away?
Some people feel immediate relief, while others notice gradual improvements over a few days or sessions. Everyone responds differently, and the effects of acupuncture tend to build over time.
Can I Get Acupuncture While Pregnant?
Absolutely! Acupuncture is a wonderful, non-invasive way to support pregnancy. Just let your practitioner know so they can tailor your treatment accordingly.
